01 / Overview
Privacy is part of the product.
This Privacy Policy describes how Klay — Stash Your Bill & Pay (the “app,” “Klay,” “we,” or “us”) handles information when you use the Android app or a related page that links to this policy. It is based on the current app implementation, including its local Room/SQLite database, private preferences, app-private files, Android permissions, and export flows.
Klay is the developer responsible for the app’s own data handling. The current website is informational: it does not provide a Klay account, payment service, or web form. If you contact us, we receive and use the information you send to respond and manage the request.
The short version: Klay does not require an account and does not have internet permission. Bill calculations and local records are designed to run on your device. Information can leave the device when you deliberately export or share it through Android, or when you contact support.
02 / Data on your device
What Klay stores locally
To provide the app’s features, Klay may store the following in its private app storage:
- Bills and calculations: bill titles, totals, currencies, tips, taxes, equal or itemized split details, payer selections, due dates, reminders, balances, and payment logs.
- People and groups: friend names, group names, profile details, payment instructions, and selected avatar or payment QR images.
- Contacts you choose: if you tap “Choose from contacts,” Android’s system contact picker supplies the selected contact’s display name so you can prefill a friend. Klay does not request broad address-book access or upload your contacts.
- Attachments: receipt images, payment QR images, and proof-of-payment images that you choose through Android’s system file or photo picker.
- Preferences and drafts: profile settings, app preferences, and an in-progress bill draft.
The app uses AndroidX Room over SQLite for structured records, private preferences for settings and drafts, and app-private files for attachments. The current Android manifest disables automatic app backup (allowBackup=false); Klay does not operate cloud sync or a developer-operated backup store. Klay does not add its own database or backup encryption. Device-level protections and any security features provided by Android apply. These records may contain personal information about you and other people, so only enter information you are authorised to use.
03 / How we use data
Only for the feature or request in front of you.
Klay uses information to provide the feature you choose: calculate and record bills, keep local reminders, create exports, restore a backup you select, and respond to support or privacy requests. We may also use information we receive to protect the app and our communications, comply with law, and keep the service reliable.
- No account or cloud sync: Klay does not currently operate a user-account system or a cloud database for your local bill records.
- No advertising profile: The current app does not include advertising or analytics SDKs, and Klay does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- No automated decisions: Klay does not use your information to make decisions about eligibility, credit, employment, housing, or other similarly significant matters.
Where a local law requires a legal basis for information we receive, the basis will depend on the activity: providing a feature or support you request, our legitimate interests in security and service reliability, your consent where we specifically ask for it, or a legal obligation.
04 / Children and target audience
Klay is not a child-directed app.
Based on its current features and positioning, Klay is a general-purpose bill-splitting and expense-recording utility for people managing real-world group expenses. It is not designed, marketed, or intended primarily for children under 13, or the applicable equivalent age in a user’s location. It is not a child-directed game, education product, or family-directed service.
Because Klay can store bill totals, balances, payment instructions, QR images, and proof-of-payment images, users and parents or guardians should use it only as appropriate for their age and local law. Klay does not knowingly collect personal information online from children. If a child has sent information to us, a parent or guardian can contact us and request review or deletion of information we hold.
Google Play setup: The Play Console target-audience declaration must be truthful. If children are included in the selected audience, Google Play Families requirements apply, including child-appropriate content, accurate Data safety and ratings answers, and restrictions on SDKs, identifiers, and ads. See Google Play’s target-audience guidance and Families Policy.
If the product later becomes child-directed or intentionally targets children, this policy, the app flow, SDK choices, and Play Console declarations must be reassessed before release.
05 / Sharing and exports
No local record is exported without your action.
Klay can create a text summary, CSV, JSON backup, image receipt, or PDF report. When you choose to share or save one, Android’s system share sheet or document picker sends the file to the destination you select. A shared file may include participant names, amounts, payment instructions, status, and any images included in the record.
Review exported files for names, amounts, payment details, and personal images.
The receiving app, document provider, messaging service, or cloud storage handles its copy under its own policy.
JSON and CSV backups are readable and are not password-encrypted by Klay. Klay does not control or receive copies stored by another app or provider.
06 / Permissions
Small permissions, clear purpose.
The current Android manifest does not request internet permission, and the app source does not include advertising or analytics SDKs.
07 / Google Play and third parties
Some processing belongs to the platform or the destination you choose.
Google Play, Google Play services, Android, your device manufacturer, your email provider, and the apps or cloud services you choose from Android’s share sheet may process information under their own terms and privacy policies. Klay does not control copies or technical data handled by those providers.
Before installing: Review Klay’s Google Play listing, its Data safety section, the Google Play Store privacy information (Google Privacy Policy), and the Google Play Terms of Service. Google’s policy covers Google’s processing through Google Play; this policy covers Klay’s own processing.
The Google Play Data safety information is a store-level summary and can vary by app version, region, and age. Klay will keep its Play Console disclosures aligned with the actual released build. If the app later adds accounts, cloud sync, advertising, analytics, or other SDKs, this policy and the store disclosures must be updated before that change is released.
08 / Retention and deletion
You decide how long your stash stays.
Local records remain until you delete them, reset app data, or uninstall Klay. When a receipt or other attachment is no longer referenced by a saved record, profile, or draft, the app can remove that app-private file. Temporary generated exports in the app cache are cleaned when they are more than 24 hours old and the app opens.
Use More → Backup & Restore → Reset all data to clear local bills, friends, groups, payment logs, attachments, drafts, and settings. Uninstalling Klay also removes its app-private data. Copies you already exported to another app, device, or cloud provider must be deleted there separately.
We keep support or privacy-request messages only as long as reasonably needed to respond, document the request, meet legal obligations, or resolve a dispute. If a hosting or email provider creates technical logs, that provider controls those logs and their retention under its own policy. Klay does not currently maintain a cloud copy of your local bill records.
If a security incident involving information Klay holds creates a legal obligation to notify people or authorities, we will provide notice as required by the law that applies.
09 / Regional privacy rights
Your local law may give you additional choices.
Global availability does not make every privacy law apply to every person or business. This section supplements the rest of this policy where the law of your country, state, or territory applies. Because Klay’s bill records are designed to stay on your device, some requests can be completed immediately in the app and we cannot retrieve information that Klay has never received.
Depending on the activity and local law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a portable copy of information, and to withdraw consent where consent is the basis. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority. See the EU rights overview or UK privacy guidance.
California and other state laws may provide access or “know,” correction, deletion, and opt-out rights, including opt-outs for sale, targeted advertising, or certain profiling where applicable. Klay’s current app does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. See the California Privacy Protection Agency.
Where the LGPD applies, you may have rights to confirmation and access, correction, anonymisation, blocking or deletion where applicable, portability subject to regulation, information about sharing, and revocation of consent. See Brazil’s ANPD data-subject rights.
Where the Data Privacy Act applies, you may have rights to be informed, access, object, rectify, erasure or blocking, data portability, and to file a complaint. See the Philippine National Privacy Commission’s data-subject rights.
Where applicable, privacy laws may provide access and correction rights and a route to complain to the relevant regulator after contacting us. See the Australian Privacy Principles and Canada’s PIPEDA access guidance.
Other countries and territories may grant additional rights or require local representatives, notices, or transfer safeguards. Contact us and we will handle your request under the law that applies to it.
To exercise a right, email klay.devteam@gmail.com or use Klay More > Contact Support. If we receive support or privacy-request information and it crosses a national border, we will use the transfer safeguards required by applicable law. We may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify the request and protect other people’s privacy. Where a law requires a specific response period or complaint route, that law controls.
